“Saving the lives of Indigenous Mothers and Children in Guatemala”

Indigenous Maya women and children in Totonicapán, Guatemala face one of the highest rates of preventable deaths in all of Latin America. Horizons of Friendship, an Ontario-based international development organization is working with a local Guatemalan partner to provide culturally-pertinent health education, skills training and medical equipment for this vulnerable population. Learn how Rotary is supporting this innovative initiative, which is funded by the Government of Canada, to save the lives of mothers and their babies.

Raúl Scorza, Community Outreach/Communications Coordinator
Originally from Mexico, Raúl graduated from the University of British Columbia with a B.A. in International Relations. Raúl coordinates community outreach initiatives under Horizons’ maternal, newborn and child health project in Guatemala. This includes knowledge exchanges between Canadian and Guatemalan health practitioners.

Debbie Morales, Resource Development Coordinator

Debbie is a teacher with degrees in Education and International Development from Trent University. Debbie works with government and private donors, participates in Educational Tours to visit projects in the field and provides guidance on Ontario Curriculum links for Horizons’ educational work with public schools.
